Essential Tips: Wisdom Tooth Extraction Aftercare

Having your wisdom teeth removed is a common procedure, but proper aftercare is crucial to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery. At Harmony Medical Center, we provide expert guidance to help you heal quickly and prevent complications.

While these are general recommendations, we ensure all our patients receive detailed post-extraction instructions tailored to their specific needs and circumstances. These personalized instructions will comprehensively cover managing discomfort, controlling bleeding, dietary guidelines, and proper oral hygiene techniques.

Should you experience any unusual symptoms or have any concerns during your healing process, we encourage you to contact your oral surgeon immediately.

Immediate Post-Extraction Care

Bite Down on Gauze

Apply firm, gentle pressure on the gauze pad placed over the extraction site for at least 30-45 minutes to help control bleeding. Replace it as needed.

Manage Pain & Swelling

  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.
  • Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek in 15-minute intervals to reduce swelling during the first 24 hours.

Rest & Avoid Strenuous Activity

Give your body time to heal by resting for the first 24 to 48 hours and avoiding heavy lifting or vigorous exercise.

Eating & Drinking Guidelines

Stick to Soft Foods

Eat nutritious, soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup, and smoothies. Avoid crunchy, hard, or spicy foods that may irritate the site.

Stay Hydrated, but Avoid Straws

Drink plenty of water, but do not use straws for at least a week to prevent dry socket, a painful condition caused by dislodging the blood clot.

Oral Hygiene & Healing

Gentle Rinsing Only

  • Avoid rinsing for the first 24 hours, or as instructed by your surgeon.
  • Afterward, rinse gently with warm salt water 2-3 times a day to keep the area clean.

No Smoking or Alcohol

Avoid smoking, alcohol, and carbonated drinks, as they can interfere with healing and increase the risk of infection.

Keep Your Head Elevated

Sleeping with your head slightly elevated helps reduce swelling and promotes faster healing.

Watch for Warning Signs

Call Your Dentist If You Experience:

  • Severe or prolonged pain beyond 3-4 days
  • Excessive bleeding or pus from the extraction site
  • Fever or chills, which may indicate an infection
  • Persistent bad breath or foul taste, signs of dry socket
